The Role of Community in Pursuing Holiness

It can be misleading to think that it is better to be holy alone. Modernity speaks of holiness as the idea of leaving everyone, withdrawing into a cave, and being holy. It is an interesting idea, and at the same time, it seems too easy. We can rely on our structured schedules and rituals to help us grow closer to God, or we can take the high road and pursue holiness where we are now, welcoming the opportunity to grow closer to God in our family, work life, and community of friends. For example, offering a patient response to a family member after a long day, helping a colleague in need at work, or reaching out in kindness to someone who is struggling are all ways to express holiness in daily life. Even small gestures, like praying together as a family before meals, listening to friends with compassion, or forgiving those who have hurt us, help us become more aware of God’s constant loving presence in our lives. In these everyday moments, we can strive for holiness.

All the readings this weekend speak of the Holy Spirit and how he works in our lives. Phillip brought the gospel to Samaria, and Peter and John came to the people, laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. They received the gift of God through the community. The Second Reading reminds us that it is the Holy Spirit who infuses us with life, gives us the words we need to give witness to the love of God, and to do it with courtesy and reverence. Paul exhorts us to make our hearts the throne of Christ. The heart is the center of emotions, ideas, feelings, and decisions. Jesus must be the king who governs our hearts, not a museum piece or nice feeling. Welcoming the Holy Spirit can be practiced by taking a moment for prayer each morning, consciously asking the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and actions. Practice small acts of kindness or service to those around you, offering your help or a listening ear to someone in need. Read a passage of Scripture as a family or with friends, and let it inspire a conversation about faith. When you face a difficult situation, pause and ask the Holy Spirit for patience and understanding. In these ways, we open ourselves to God’s work in our lives and allow Jesus to truly reign in our hearts.

The Gospel today begins this extensive section of our Lord’s words in the Last Supper. Today, we are reminded that love of Jesus is about keeping his commands. Jesus will not leave us orphans, for he cares for us. He will give us the Advocate so that we can grow close to God in our family, work life, and community. Jesus will reveal himself to us through others. Let us encourage one another to support and lift each other up in our daily lives, recognizing that, in doing so, we help others become more aware of God’s presence. Look for ways to share our journeys of faith, reach out to those in need, and celebrate how Jesus is revealed through the community. By growing together, we not only strengthen our own faith but also help one another on the path to holiness and belonging in Christ.
