Pope Leo VII: A Complex Legacy of Reform and Expulsion

The seventh lion of Rome held the reins of Peter from 936 to 939. He tapped the wisdom of Saint Odo, Cluny’s second abbot, to mediate political conflicts in Italy. He supported the Abbey of Cluny, which was the centerpiece of medieval monasticism, bringing the monastic spirit throughout all Europe.

His legacy is complicated when it comes to his relationship with our Jewish siblings. He did not force their conversion, yet expelled them from Germany if they did not convert.

In short, Pope Leo VII is remembered as a spiritual reformer who supported the Cluniac reforms to bring order to a chaotic church, but his legacy is stained by his support of the expulsion of the Jewish community in Germany.
