The fifth Lion of Rome was not dubbed a saint under his Leonine name. He was on the throne of Peter for one month in 903. The end of his life is a murder mystery. Presumed to have been a victim of his chaplain and protégé, thrown into prison, and strangled. The pope who followed after him was an antipope.
His death is a complex story shrouded in politics and papal scandal. I will not attempt to iterate on that story here. What is worth noting is that this papacy is a prime example of the pope experiencing betrayal, as his Lord did. Every pope is a witness of faith, and some, like Pope Leo V, are one with Christ in the face of treachery.
