The Coronation of Charlemagne: Pope Leo III’s Legacy

Pope Saint Leo III (750-816) is best known for being the pope who crowned Charlemagne on Christmas Day 800 AD at Saint Peter’s in the Vatican. This event hallmarked the authority of the pope in the Western World and strengthened the bonds of the Church with the Empire.
