Avoiding Favoritism in Monastic Communities

Chapter 2.16-22

The abbot should avoid all favoritism in the monastery. He is not to love one more than another unless he finds someone better in good actions and obedience. A man born free is not to be given higher rank than a slave who becomes a monk, except for some good reason. But the abbot is free, if he sees fit, to change anyone’s rank as justice demands. Ordinarily, everyone is to keep to his regular place, because whether slave or free, we are all one in Christ (Gal 3:28; Eph 6:8) and share alike in bearing arm in the service of the one Lord, for God shows no partiality among persons (Rom 2:11). Only in this are we distinguished in his sight: if we are found better than others in works and in humility. Therefore, the abbot is to show equal love to everyone and apply the same discipline to all according to their merits.

Reflection

Benedict makes it very clear that there is no career ladder climbing in the monastery. Living in a monastic community is a matter of discernment, everything measured by good works and humility.

The disposition and motives of others easily present themselves when living in community. Benedict reminds us that titles of the world are unimportant in communal living because we are all one in Christ. When we are recognized for good work, it is to give us the sustenance needed to continue working for the kingdom of God, and this is why humility is equally important.

We are all instruments of God. A piano never gets credit or accolades for the pianist’s stunning concert performance. The pianist uses the instrument’s complete surrender to make beautiful music. Let us surrender ourselves to God in all humility so that God can advance his kingdom on earth through us.

Prayer

Loving God, I am yours. Let me make myself available to you this day. Take my life and use it to advance your kingdom today. Amen.
