The Christmas octave has an interesting flow of feasts. Yesterday, we celebrated the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. Tomorrow, we commemorate the martyrdom of the Holy Innocents.
What does Saint John the Evangelist have to teach us about Christmas as we celebrate his day between two martyr feast days?
Saint John is popularly portrayed as placing his ear against our Lord’s chest. He teaches us to give witness to his written testimony: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John stayed close to Jesus. We must imitate him and place our ear against the heart of the Christ child and listen attentively to the heart that has loved us!
In my opinion, no other carol sings of the Incarnation as profoundly as God, Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. It beautifully expresses the mission of the Word. Take a listen!
