Each month, I reflect on a small portion of the Rule of Saint Benedict. May the Rule shape our hearts in following Jesus.
Prologue Verses 45-50
| Therefore we intend to establish a school for the Lord’s service. In drawing up its regulations, we hope to set down nothing harsh, nothing burdensome. The good of all concerned, however, may prompt us to a little strictness in order to amend the faults and to safeguard love. Do not be daunted immediately by fear and run away from the road that leads to salvation. It is bound to be narrow at the outset. But as we progress in this way of life and in faith, we shall run on the path to God’s commandments, our hearts overflowing wtih the inexpressible delight of love. Never swerving from his instructions, then, but faithfully observing his teaching in the monastery until death, we shall through pateince share in the sufferings of Christ that we may deserve also to share in his kingdom. Amen. |
Commentary
With these words, we come to the end of the Prologue. The life of a monk can be seen as a school of service. A monk is always learning. This particular life is an invitation to all who desire to seek God. As Benedict mentions, there is nothing harsh of this Rule, it is an intentional life where God gives what we need to follow him faithfully. It is a life that is focused on maintaining a community rooted in love. Rather than a Rule, where consequences are applied, perhaps we can look at Benedict’s work as his vision. We try, we fail, we try again. We never undertake this task in following God alone. We do it together.
Not all of us will be monks, but we can take these thoughts and apply them in our own lives. Our lives can be a school of continuous learning, a life open to service and new horizons. We can live a life that is faithful to God until death.
Prayer
O God, as I accept this invitation to follow you according to the path set out by Benedict, let me be open to the vistas and valleys where you will lead me. Let me always have the heart of a student, willing to learn and be formed in love. Amen.
