O Root of Jesse

What is your O? O Root of Jesse.

“O Root of Jesse, you arise as a sign for all mankind, before you all the kings will fall silent, and to you all nations will cry out: Come, Lord, O come to save us, and do not delay.” —Magnificat antiphon for December 19

The father of King David is the reference to today’s antiphon. Jesse’s tree is the symbol of the House of David. From the roots of this tree, Christ will come. When the bud sprouts from these roots, it will be in the silence of creation …. that silent night. From this stump of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1-3), in the deep roots of God’s abiding promise will come the savior.

Jesus is the root of our whole existence. We have to dig deep in the spiritual winter of our lives and wait patiently for his coming. The Spirit of God will rest upon Him. Rest in the hope that God’s timing is perfect within our imperfect time.
