Five books for Advent

Advent is a time to reconnect with God. I am suggesting five books for this season. These books can help sustain reflection in this busy time as we embark on the journey to Christmas. Recommendation #2 will surprise you!

#5 The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander (2020)

At 192 pages, this book will appeal to musicians. British Catholic writer and artist, Caryll Houselander, speaks lovingly of the humanity of Mary. She helps us see Mary as God’s primary musical instrument. A beautiful read for this time of the year.

#4 Joy to the World: How Christ’s Coming Changed Everything (and Still Does) by Scott Hahn (2014).

Renowned scripture scholar Dr. Scott Hahn shares an important message. He reminds us of a provocative truth. God saves us through a human family and the story of their relationship with shepherds, magicians, emperor, and angels. This is presented in a refreshing take on the Christmas story.

#3 Visiting the Visitation: Reflections on Luke 1 & 2 by Owen F. Cummings (2024).

Dr. Owen Cummings does a beautiful job in presenting the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. He provides in-depth consideration to the Jewish culture and context of Jesus’ time. This understanding will enrich our devotional love the Jewess and Palestinian peasant, Miriam (whom we know as Mary). I appreciate Cummings for introducing me to theologians within his own world. They shape and broaden my theological thinking.

#2 What Happens at Mass by Jeremy Driscoll, OSB (2011).

In one sense, this book has nothing to do with Advent. In another sense, it has everything to do with it. Advent is the beginning of the new liturgical year. It is an appropriate time to remember what is most important in the Christian experience: celebrating Eucharist. In my opinion, the Christmas liturgy captures the whole salvation story with the Incarnation and Paschal Mystery. No better way to prepare for the Christmas liturgy than reading through this book.

This work is a well thought out, intelligent, and straightforward approach to the ritual form of the Mass.

#1 Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives Pope Benedict XVI (2012).

This short book is the third in the series of Pope Benedict XVI’s masterpiece on the life of Jesus. It is theologically rich, making the story of Jesus’ Incarnation relative and meaningful for us today.
