Finding True and Eternal Life: A Guide to Discipleship

Prologue Verses 14-18

Seeking his workman in a multitude of people, the Lord calls out to him and lifts his voice again: Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days? (Ps 33[34]:13). If you hear this and your answer is “I do,” God then directs these words to you: If you desire true and eternal life, keep your tongue free from vicious talk and your lips from all deceit; turn away from evil and do good’ let peace be your quest and aim (Ps. 34:14-15). Once you have done this, my eyes will be upon you and my ears will listen for your prayers; and even before you ask me, I will say to you: Here I am (Is. 58:9).

Commentary

Benedict reminds us that disciples have a daily duty. Using the language of the scriptures, Benedict urges us to be careful with our tongues. Peace is our aim and praise is always our intention. Fostering silence in the morning is a good thing. Having praise be the first thing uttered from our lips is always a noble practice for every disciple.

Our tongue is a powerful muscle. It can tear people down with gossip or build them up through collaboration and good work. Speaking well with a good tongue is a matter of being rooted in God. Each day, the Lord renews his call to walk in his love. Each day, we have the opportunity to give God a renewed response. God, in his loving tenderness, accepts our exhortation and listens to us. Let us be on our way and use every opportunity to respond to God.

Prayer

God, you spoke, and everything came into being. You creatively filled the universe with wonder so that we should praise You. Your same voice moves my heart to honor Your divine majesty. Help me start this day by thinking of You, so I always keep sight of Your holy presence. Amen.
