Rising from Sleep: Embracing the Voice of God | Commentary on Prologue Verses 8-13

Prologue Verses 8-13

Let us get up then, at long last, for the Scriptures rouse us when they say: It is high time for us to arise from sleep (Rom 13:11). Let us open our eyes to the light that comes from God, and our ears to the voice from heaven that every day calls out this charge. If you hear his voice today, do not harden your hearts (Ps 94[95]:8). And again: You that have ears to hear; listen to what the Spirit says to the churches (Rev 2:7). And what does he say? Come and listen to me, sons; I will teach you the fear of the Lord (Ps 33[34]:12). Run while you have the light of life, that the darkness of death may not overtake you (John 12:35).

Commentary

I have prayed at the Divine Office with the Zoom community for the past few years. We have grown accustomed to not saying anything until we officially start with prayer. This deliberate silence prepares our ears and hearts to listen to the voice of God. Rising from the bed is done in silence. Preparing coffee is done in silence. Putting the ribbons of the Divine Office in place is done in silence. These actions prepare the mind and heart to welcome the voice of God, who is always speaking.

When God speaks through the liturgy, we are roused from sleep! It is a rehearsal of our rising from the dead on the last day. God will call us. We shall say to the Father, “Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise.” In this passage, Benedict shows how his life praises God as the Scriptures flow in his speech. Let us welcome the Word to take root in our lives as well.

God is always speaking. God is always drawing my heart and whole being into a relationship with him, a communion of love. This passage in the prologue is another reminder that we must listen. In listening, our hearts are roused to respond in love, ready to be receptive to his work this day.

Prayer

O Word made flesh, speak love and mercy into my life. Rouse my heart and my whole being to praise you in my work. Let me be mindful of your loving presence in my life. Amen.
